How can I help?
Look and listen.
Be there for her. Look at her while she's talking, listen to what she says, and recognize what she needs from you.
Be mindful of her feelings and let her know that she's understood. Make sure to be loving, honest, and sympathetic toward her and what she is going through.
Educate yourself about PPD so you can understand what mom is going through and how you can help.
Help out around the house.
Offer your help frequently. Assist her with cooking meals, caring for the baby, and other daily tasks, or find someone who can help.
Let her know that she can open up to you and that you can help facilitate the discussion with her doctor if needed. It's important for her to seek out professional help.
Help her stay on track.
You can help to keep her on track. If she's feeling discouraged, talk to her about how she is feeling.
Even if it's a few minutes to take a shower or walk around the block, make sure mom gets the time she needs to care for herself.
Be a regular source of support before, during, and after pregnancy. Let mom know that the two of you are a team, and that you are there for her throughout this journey.
Take care of yourself.
When caring for others, it is important to take care of yourself before anyone else. Take breaks when needed, and seek out other friends and family who you know will want to help.
Please remind your loved one that her doctor should always be her primary resource for any questions.
